Finance major originated from Jimei Business School founded in 1920 by Mr. Tan Kah Kee, a patriotic overseas Chinese leader. The school motto of Sincerity and Perseverance has been perfectly inherited over the past 100 years.
In 1996, it was entitled to enroll undergraduates and postgraduates in 2012. And in the year of 2020, it was approved as one of the projects for the first-class undergraduate program development in Jimei University.
Teaching and Academic Research
The Finance Department has an excellent teaching and research team, in recent years, it has taken on grants from Projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China, Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education of China, Provincial Key and Major Programs, and 20 projects entrusted by local governments. The staff have published a quantity of thesis in the journals indexed by CSSCI, lots of features and planned textbooks have come out. The finance specialty holds on to "regarding the books as basis", promoting “four regressions”. It aims to cultivate financial professionals with high political awareness and broad professional vision. The specialty provision and professional cultivation plan meet the needs of the society. It attaches great importance to Tan Kah-kee Spirit and code of professional ethic, highlighting specialty characteristics, constructing an integrated teaching system of training, practice and academic research. With 26 fieldwork bases, the specialty’s five-pronged approach to experimental teaching system has come into being, which includes course experiment, experiment courses, practical training, financial data, experiment of computing and modeling and innovation and entrepreneurship training program for the students. In terms of academic research, with Center for Financial Asset Allocation and Management, Xiamen as a platform, the department conducts research on the projects and offers decision-making and consulting services for the governmental agencies.
The Teaching Staff
The finance department has a full-time teaching staff of 16, among whom 4 professors, 5 associate professors; there are 10 teachers with PH.D., taking up 62.5%, and 2 coming from Taiwan. 1 Program for Excellent New Century Talents in University, Fujian, 1 Outstanding Young Scientific Researcher, and 1 part-time professor of Incentive Plan for Minjiang Scholars. The staff is experienced and of high academic standards.
Characteristics of the Major
The specialty of Finance, characterized by micro-finance, places emphasis on the idea of practical applications of the theoretical principles. It gears to the cultivation of professionals for the financial grassroot units and enterprises. The program has made transition to financial digitization by adding the courses regarding financial technologies, python-based financial analysis, financial data, and computation and modeling experiments, which will help improve the students’ ability to conduct analysis on big-data-based financial business. The program is application-oriented, aiming to develop students’ logical thinking in solving the problems. It focuses on the ability to identify problems and then deliver to them relevant financial technologies and methods. The teachers take part in the events like “The Second Classroom”, “Professional Salon” and “Professional Skills Competition”, so as they can guide the students toward a better mastery of the theoretical principles and an improvement of practical skills.

The education objective is to meet the demand of the social, economic development, make coordinated development of theoretical knowledge, capability and inner quality. Thus, the program can give them extra advantages after graduation. To achieve this goal, the students have to lay a solid foundation in theoretical knowledge and innovative capability in finance, grasping tools in the fields of finance and investment. With Tan Kah-kee Spirit and professional ethic, they are provided with the data analysis capability, and so they can adapt to social development, and thus they will be competent in the positions of the financial field.
This program focuses on the study of basic theoretical principles. And it offers some trainings such as banking business management, financial planning, investment management, insurance business management, and so on. All these trainings will enable the students to have high hands-on practical ability. With reasonable intellectual structure built up by the academic and practice program, four years of study will contribute to the development of scientific mode of thinking, and the students will be brought up with innovative spirit, entrepreneurship awareness and social responsibility.
