Institute of Finance and Economics, Jimei University, begins its origin as Jimei School of Business, which was founded by Tan Kah Kee, the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, in Aug.1920. It now has a history of 100 years. In 2004 it started to enroll the postgraduate students of national economics. Its applied economics is among the Top Disciplines of Fujian Province and in 2004 it was authorized as a master’s degree granting institution with 5 research directions: Fiscal Science, Finance, International Trade, Industrial Economics and Regional Economics.
There is a full-time teaching staff of 61 teachers,among whom 21 professors and 25 associate professors, accounting for 75% of the teaching staff. There are 47 teachers with doctoral degree, making up 78%, and among whom one leading talent of philosophy and social science, 2 Xiamen “Tip-top Talent”,2 provincial leading talents of management accounting, and 11 have been elected the distinguished young scholars or excellent talents of universities and colleges in Fujian.
The institute integrate specialties and local characteristics, forming its competitive edge. The courses offered, being integrated specialties and local situations, are distinctive. There is creativity in public finance research, including study of fiscal performance of local governments, taxation policy and their role in the promotion of the emerging industries. Finance, whose research on household asset allocation, conducted from the microfinance perspective, is distinctive, too; the research on international trade has achieved some important results on the strategy of strengthening China's economy and trade; as for the academic research on regional economics, there is a series of research findings concerning infrastructure and coordinated development between different regions; and the academic results of industrial economics have contributed to the consultancy for some cities’ industrial planning.
In the past 5 years, the faculty is active in academic research, which has turned out to be fruitful. (1) undertake the national or provincial key projects. 370 granting from research funds arriving at 15 million yuan. Among which, 5 projects from National Natural Fund Project and National Social Science Fund; 56 provincial and ministerial key projects. (2) 176 academic papers published, among them, 63 in the journals indexed by SCI and CSSCI; 28 publications,11 textbooks; (3)12 other awards, and 3 of them are province-or ministry-level awards.
In terms of serving the society with academic research, the institute has the advantage of its own. Basing on the platforms offered by governmental agencies, such as Center for Performance Study of Finance of Local Administration, the institute has established bilateral long-term academic cooperation. Over the past 5 years, the teams have taken on more than 300 project planning and policy consultancies, and over 40 of them have been adopted by governmental agencies.
The institute constantly give priority to the improvement of education quality by promoting reform, as a result the graduates have become core force of the leadership in financial system in Fujian Province. It enjoys the reputation of the Cradle of Financial Talents in Fujian. The alumni are everywhere in the southern provinces of China and in ASEAN countries.
As for the courses offered, the disciplines of applied economics are of superior quality; accounting is selected as one of the national projects for the first-class undergraduate program development. The public finance is both the provincial and national characteristic specialty, falling into the provincial first-class undergraduate program development. Moreover, several courses have been selected as the excellent provincial ones.
